Championships Round 1 played at Wentworth, May 19
Bathurst temperature -1 degree but cold and frost have never stopped Central West vet from playing golf on Mondays
Central West vets golf report for game played at Bathurst June 30 .
Hi everyone,
It is winter and the Central West vets’ game was set down for Bathurst, so it was always going to be a cold start to the game. The temperature was -1 degree when the first group went to the tee at 8:00am with the golf course completely covered in frost, but that didn’t stop 100 Central West vet golfers from turning up for their Monday vets golf game. It did warm up to a nice 14 degrees by midday.
On to golf results
It was tough work on the golf course today. Unfortunately, the cold weather, the frost and some very, very, hard pin placements made good scores hard to come by with very few players playing to their handicap or better.
Best in A grade was Darrell Bourke with a very consistent round of 35 points.
A three-way countback was required to find second place when Ian Fitzgerald, Barry Rhodes and John Fagan returned scores of 34 points. Ian’s back nine of 18 points got him second place with Barry and John having to settle for a ball on the ball sweep.
The B grade winner was Geoff Coleman with the best score of the day of 40 points. Second was Bill Wilcox with 38 points.
A countback was also required to decide the ladies’ comp winner when Leone Dalton and Laurell Gassman both had scores of 36 points. Laurell had an excellent start to the game with 20 points on the front nine but faded a little on the back nine for 16 points. Leone was steady throughout with 18 points on the first nine matched by another 18 points on the back nine which gave her the winner’s trophy.
The ball sweep went down to 30 points on a countback and the nearest to the pin winners were Ian Fitzgerald on the 4th, David Vaughan on the 8th, Trish Harvey on the 13th and John Fagan on the 16th.
Today’s game was the second round of the Championships. Full results and list of winners will be sent on another email in the next few days.
